Your Opportunity

We are looking for a Cataloguer to join our team in Didcot to contribute to our dynamic Library Services. The successful candidate will play a vital role in cataloguing various library materials and ensuring proper subject classification and metadata management. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong background in cataloguing who is passionate about making library resources easily accessible and organized according to industry standards.

The Cataloguer will work with various classification systems and perform full-level cataloguing, adhering to RDA (Resource Description and Access) standards. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, a deep understanding of classification systems, and a commitment to ensuring that all materials are correctly cataloged and accessible.

What You'll Do

  • Assign Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and related sub-headings following the SCM and LCSH rules.
  • Apply Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and cutter numbers, adhering to LCC and CSM guidelines.
  • Utilize Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and apply the most current edition.
  • Implement Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and related sub-heading strings.
  • Work with National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifications and other regional classifications as required.
  • Perform full-level cataloging in MARC (or other metadata formats), following RDA and Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloguing Policy Statements.
  • Conduct searches on OCLC, LC Catalog, and other authorities when necessary.
  • Upgrade LC CIP records and less-than-full-level records as needed.

Account Processing

  • Generate and deliver files for GOBI's Library Technical Services.
  • Process customizations on bibliographic records and materials based on account requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Book Processing Unit to print and distribute spine labels for shelf-ready books.
  • Produce daily production paperwork (PDFs) as required.
  • Contribute to the establishment of system policies, standards, and schedules.
  • Support LTS Specialists and the Cataloging Unit as required.

About You

Experience

  • Proven experience in library technical services or a strong knowledge of library operations.
  • Familiarity with tools like LC Classification Web, OCLC Connexion, Cataloguer’s Desktop, and/or OCLC WebDewey.
  • Proficiency in assigning Library of Congress and/or Dewey classification numbers.
  • Expertise in subject cataloging and authority files.
  • In-depth understanding of current cataloguing guidelines (RDA) and MARC 21 Bibliographic standards, particularly for monographs.
  • Solid knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system and subject headings.
  • A broad understanding of cataloguing unit functions and adherence to LTS quality assurance standards.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster productive working relationships across the department.
  • Qualifications: Bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred
